As a parent, you want the best for your child, and their smile is no exception. At Herzberg Orthodontics, we believe early evaluations can provide valuable insights into your child’s oral health and development. Understanding when and why to visit the orthodontist can help ensure your child’s teeth and jaw grow properly.

When is the Best Time to Schedule Your Child’s First Orthodontic Appointment?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic check-up by age 7. By this time, enough permanent teeth have emerged, and jaw development is well underway. An early evaluation can help identify potential issues and determine if any treatment might be beneficial. While many children won’t need immediate intervention, 15% of our current patients are between the ages of 7 and 10, receiving care tailored to their needs.

At Herzberg Orthodontics, we take a conservative approach to treatment. Our goal is to monitor growth and recommend treatment only if it’s truly necessary. We provide complimentary consultations and evaluations to give parents clear, honest guidance. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and better understand your child’s oral development without feeling pressured.

What is Phase 1 Treatment?

Orthodontic care is sometimes divided into two phases. Phase 1, or early interceptive treatment, is designed to address issues before they become more serious. This might include managing crowding, addressing spacing concerns, guiding jaw growth, or helping to break habits like thumb-sucking. Every child is different, and not all will require Phase 1 treatment. During your child’s consultation, Dr. Herzberg will carefully assess their dental and facial development to make personalized recommendations.

What Appliances Are Used During Phase 1 Treatment?

If early treatment is needed, various orthodontic appliances may be recommended. These can include braces, expanders, space maintainers, or habit-correcting devices. Our team will explain each option and why it may benefit your child. With decades of experience, Dr. Herzberg is equipped to provide thoughtful, individualized care in a comfortable, supportive environment.

What Are the Benefits of Phase 1 Treatment?

When orthodontic issues are identified and treated early, it can reduce the likelihood of more complex treatments in the future. Early intervention can often shorten treatment time in braces or aligners during adolescence. Additionally, guiding jaw growth at a younger age can lead to improved long-term results.

At Herzberg Orthodontics, we understand that orthodontic decisions can feel overwhelming. Our team is here to provide clear information and support, ensuring you feel confident in your choices. We’re happy to answer any questions you may have and work alongside you to promote your child’s healthy smile.
